A Twittering Dilettante’s Miscellaneous Observations from the 2009 O’Reilly TOC for Publishing Conference:

1. Canadian Bookish types seem much better prepared (or at least more cognizant of options) for the future of publishing than do their American counterparts. (They are also, for the most part, cuter and more polite than their neighbors to the south).
2. Lots more boys than girls were in attendance. Sarah Weinman noted this phenomenon in her summary of TOC and termed it a “gender divide”: (Other, more mercenary types might prefer to term it a "favorable ratio" - take note & consider attending next year, all ye single women looking for bookish geeky boys w/ little hope of financial success.)
@mdash3. Not sure if this is specific to bookish tweeple, or just a fact of twitter life, but – turns out that those tweeps with cartoon avatars look much more like their avatars than do those tweeps with photographs for avatars. Case in point, Mark Bertils (aka @mdash - see image to the right). Swear to god – looks so much like his cartoon avatar it’s not even funny. No, wait. It IS funny. I, apparently, look much better in my avatar photo than I do in real life, which makes me reticent to participate further in any more of real life.
4. Industry class lines do not seem to be an issue at TOC the way they do at BEA – CEO’s of major publishing companies were perfectly willing to chat with lowly bloggers (like me) AND everyone seemed interested in what everyone else had to say. This is huge, and hopefully will spill over into BEA and other industry get-togethers. (shut up, it could happen).
5. No one was talking about books. I mean, people were talking about the idea of books and what the world of books is evolving/changing into, but no one was talking about specific books and authors they were excited about (with the exception of Jeff Jarvis who talked a LOT--dare I say “too much?” -- about his book, “What Would Google Do?”)

A side by side comparison would surely show them you are fibbing. I look nothing like my avatar honest. OK maybe a little bit. Just stalling. I am camera shy. My mom doesn't even have a photo me. :)
