Boot Camp for Twitter: ATTENNNNN-TION!

Darlings:

I'm very proud, excited, and happy (yup - happy) to say I am chairing an upcoming event for O'Reilly Media that is all about the Twitter. This particular event, the O'Reilly Twitter Boot Camp, will be focused on how Marketing, PR and Advertising professionals (and, for that matter, anyone who is interested in promoting their brand(s) and/or cultivating their user community) can best incorporate Twitter into their campaigns/efforts/strategies. Because, when it comes to identifying, listening to, and engaging with your customer/user base - Twitter is an incredibly simple and dynamic platform.

And it's FUN to boot!

Twitter is freaking awesome. Do I gush? I'm sorry. Please do forgive, but. um. I just seriously can't say enough good things about Twitter.

Twitter is my baby. I love Twitter, I adore Twitter, I believe in Twitter. In fact, I do not exaggerate (though I often do) when I say that Twitter has pretty much single-handedly restored my faith in marketing and publicity as a viable and worthwhile profession.

Cut to me, seven months ago. I was a sad, miserable, unchallenged and unmotivated individual. I was working at a "publishing" company where I truly did not belong. I was doing work that did not suit me and, because of this I was pretty much convinced that publishing sucked and that I needed to start again - maybe as a florist or a dental hygienist.

Only problem was, I still really loved books. I still really loved the ideal of publishing and bookselling. And I still wanted to believe that (even if was not me) someone, somewhere was happily publishing great books that mattered and/or bringing them to the marketplace and loving every minute of it.

My semi-tangible little silver lining in all of this became Twitter. You see, (must have been about a year ago now) I found Twitter (thank you @katgautreaux). And, through Twitter I found a way to connect with some of the brightest, boldest, and coolest kids in the book world.

People that I had only ever before know from their frequent mentions in  Publishers Weekly were now TWEETING away before my eyes. I could tweet to THEM, and they were TWEETING BACK TO ME!

Understand, while I have been working in the field of book publishing (specifically the field of marketing books) for more than 20 years now, I am in Tucson. Sure, we have a few pockets of a vibrant little publishing community here, but it's not exactly the center of the publishing universe. Truth is, here in Tucson, you simply aren't likely to cross paths with the likes of a Tim O'Reilly or a Michael Hyatt.

So, to suddenly be on Twitter, where I was given direct access to the publishing people who were doing the publishing things I have been dreaming to do, was kind of life-changing. Via Twitter, I was now able to virtually sit in on coolest of cool publishing and marketing conferences, and sales meetings, and book launches, publicity campaign planning -- all in live time, and all in the spirit of "hey, what do YOU think about this?" It was (and is) an incredibly eye-opening, heart-warming, and truthfully - a career choice-affirming experience.

Because of Twitter, I started to think that maybe I really was in the right career after all. I was just in the wrong job. And, in addition to that, I felt like maybe, maybe this Twitter thing could be one of the best ways ever to help bring books and readers together.

Long story short - I was right. Twitter ROCKS . When it comes to bringing the right book to the right reader and vice versa, Twitter is one of the best platforms ever for the job. And Twitter and the book world are becoming fast friends.

So, I end my story there.

And, I begin my story there.

Via Twitter, I've met some of the coolest people in the world. I've become friends with them. I've found clients. I've helped friends find clients. I've helped clients find friends. Yes - it's not TWITTER that has made this happen, but Twitter has made this possible.

Twitter has made it possible to distill marketing to what it is at its best - guidance/communication/sharing of information WITH those who need it WHEN they need it, rather than interruption based messaging AT people who most likely do not want to be bothered.

And, Twitter made it possible for me to love book marketing again.

If you love or hate or just don't get Twitter - feel free to tell me about it. I caution you, I simply can not be swayed from my adoration of the Twitter. But, I am not silly enough to believe that everyone else in the world agrees with me.

And, if you are so inclined, you are hereby officially invited to the O'Reilly Twitter Boot Camp. There'll be some very smart, fun, and cool tweeps there. You'll no doubt learn more than I could ever begin to tell you (heck, I can't wait to learn what these people are going to share at this event). I'll be there - emcee-ing/hostessing (trying not to embarrass myself as I gush over the incredible line up of speakers we have on board) and you can find tons o' information about the fun that will be had here.

OH - AND you can get a whopping $50 off price of admission by using the codeword "kat" when you register. (how cool is that? code word KAT?)

So, Hope to see you in NYC at the O'Reilly Twitter Boot Camp

be there or be square-ish.

PS: added bonus -  if you come to the Twitter Boot Camp, you'll also get a free copy of :

Summer Reading - Bookish Dilettante Style

I'm not EVEN going to talk about how embarrassingly MIA I've been from my own blog of late. I'm just not. (Other than to say, I have my reasons for not having been here lately - and they're all about making the world a better place for bookish peeps, and you will thank me later.)

But, I am going to talk about bookish things.

Like BOOKS!

I still don't have my ABA/Indiebound Affiliate links up yet (see above re: things I am just not going to talk about), but I don't want to wait until I get around to doing that to resume talking about a TON of books that I really want you guys to check out -- books that will make for some excellent summer reading.

And by "check out," I don't mean you have to get them from the library. You can, of course. But, you can save yourself the time. You're going to want to own these books that I talk about here. Basically, any book I mention within the pages of this blog, you should just grab your keys, run out the front door, purchase asap at your favorite bookstore, and hold on to forever and ever. Because if I'm taking time which - based on my lack of time spent here lately, I apparently don't have - to talk about a book...it's THAT good!

So, I'm going to start with one little gem that is perfect because it sums up what summer is all about. It happens to be a fun read, but it's practical and what do you know? It makes for what is probably the best graduation gift EVER. (And, it could have made a few of my own road trips a heck of a lot more memorable - you know, in a GOOD way.)

The Little Roadtrip Handbook by Erin McHugh.

Darling Erin McHugh (or @ErinHere, as her Twitter buddies know her), has put together what is no mere guidebook. Not that it claims to be a guidebook, but I'm just saying - it IS kind of a guidebook, but it's more of a guide to recognizing the beautiful fact that a trip on the road has the potential to be so much more than just getting from point A to point B.

When I first heard about Erin's book, I was intrigued. You see, I love the romance that the term "roadtrip" conjures up--images of classic American convertibles with the top down; young kids just out of high school hitting the open road for the first time in their lives ON THEIR OWN and in search of themselves and AMERICA.

Cool stuff like that. Oh, and less poetic--but just as cool--stuff like eating really yummy-but-bad-for-you food at awesome roadside eateries, and stopping along the way to pay respects at iconic and cheesy monuments like Graceland.

Yup. I was very intrigued. Because, I've had my share of road trips, and some of them were funner than they had any right to be, but a lot of them were miserable. And, why is that? What makes one road trip rock, and another suck? Enter Erin and her Little Road Trip Handbook.

I'd venture to say that when it comes to road trips, Erin's Little Road Trip Handbook can make all the difference. Because, Erin explains (through instruction and example) how to optimize your road trip. It's all about preparation and attitude. There's the common sense stuff about things like car maintenance and leaving the illegal substances at home; but there's also (and more importantly to a girl like me) the big things like: screening out poor matches for traveling companions, and thoughtfully planning the soundtrack for your four-wheeled adventure.

Yes, Erin packs a lot of very usable info into the Handbook, lots of "off the beaten path" places to visit, recommended road-worthy snack choices -- but the beauty of the book is that it puts the roadtrip into proper perspective. It's all about enjoying the ride! It's all about doing whatever it takes to make the ride the best it can be for you and (if you find any worthy of making the trip with you) your companions.

Long live the Great American Road Trip.

And, long live great gals like Erin McHugh who know how to show us how to have a good time!

I am anxiously awaiting The Little RoadTrip II: The Grand European Adventure. So--get to work Miss Erin!

Johnny Depp, George Clooney To Save Publishing

I knew that would get your attention.

So, @PenguinPress today tweeted this:

PUBLIC ENEMIES movie tie-in edition coming soon. Perhaps we should put Johnny Depp's image on all of our covers from now on...

And I tweeted back this:

@penguinpress i think johnny depp's pic should just be a standard feature for ever book cover. we may save publishing yet!

And after that, I decided it was a really good idea and I went ahead and did it:

But, then @julietrelstad suggested this

@katmeyer @penguinpress What about George Clooney on the cover too?

And I thought, "shoot. Julie's right. Why stop with just Johnny Depp? Let's have a little variety."

So, I am pretty sure we can expect sales to go through the roof for Penguin.

Oh, and here's some not entirely gratuitous Johnny Depp in action.

it's related to the book.

You Have Snoo On Your Shirt

"What's Snoo?"

So glad you asked.

I've been a busy bookish dilettante. I know people always say that, but I really have. Being self-employed is a lot more work than working for the man. Because, there's no one telling you when it's time to stop. Or what you should and should not be doing. So you kind of just do everything, or try - and then before you know it, you haven't updated your blog for a month.

Thank goodness Twitter can be multi-tasked (it counts as work you see).

So, in the past few weeks I have been doing all kinds of cool stuff.

Like this:

And this:

And this:

And this:

Twitter Boot CampAnd This:

oops, I'm not allowed to talk about that yet. Top secret stuff. But, you'll hear about that soon.

In the meantime, I still haven't done the Bookish Dilettante-y stuff I was supposed to do a bazillion years ago - like set up my IndieBound Affiliate stuff on my blog.

Or review the wonderful books I've been reading.

Or find the cure for chocolate cravings.

SO, I should probably go do that. Just wanted to let you know what was snoo.

Luv,

Kat

Some Things That Make Domo-Kun Happy

This is Domo-Kun.

He showed up on Easter wearing a baby chick costume. I have to assume it's his favorite thing to wear as he is still wearing it two days later. As evidenced by this photograph, he loves Twitter and Easter candy.

But more than anything, Domo-Kun L-O-V-E-S loves getting a new book. Especially a surprise new book in the mail. And ESPECIALLY a surprise new book in the mail from TWO DOLLAR RADIO!!!

Once Domo-Kun has calmed down, Domo-Kun is going to read Some Things That Meant The World To Me - his new surprise-in-the-mail-from-Two-Dollar-Radio book. Then he is going to twitter a happy hello to the folks at Two Dollar Radio.

The only thing that could possibly make Domo-Kun any happier is if he had some Easter candy left.
